Which of the three detail packages does your vehicle actually need

Detailing menus are famously hard to read. Every package sounds thorough, the descriptions overlap, and it is rarely obvious which one you are supposed to pick. Ours is deliberately built as a ladder, so the honest answer is usually decided by two things: how the interior has been used, and whether the paint needs protecting or correcting.

The Legacy Special, starting at $149

One to two hours, and the right starting point for a vehicle that is fundamentally in good shape and needs refreshing rather than rescuing. Carpet and upholstery are vacuumed including the trunk and cargo areas. Console, dash and door panels are wiped down. The exterior gets a hand wash and dry, the wheels and tires are cleaned, a wet wax or ceramic detailer goes on, and the windows are cleaned.

This is the package for the car that gets driven every day, looks tired rather than neglected, and would look genuinely good again with a few focused hours on it.

The Legacy Signature Detail, starting at $249

Two to three hours. It includes everything in the Legacy Special and then goes after the two things that package cannot reach: embedded interior soil and bonded exterior contamination.

• Deep clean of carpet and upholstery, including the trunk and cargo area
• Pet hair removal, which is its own task and takes real time
• Leather cleaned and conditioned where the vehicle has it
• Door panel and crevice cleaning
• Clay bar treatment on the paint
• Hand or machine applied wax rather than a wet wax
• Tire dressing

The clay bar step is the one worth understanding. Washing removes what is sitting on the paint. It does not remove what has bonded to it, which is why a freshly washed car can still feel gritty when you run a hand over the hood. Clay lifts that bonded contamination off so the wax underneath has clean paint to bond to. Skipping it and waxing anyway means waxing over grit.

The Legacy Royal Treatment, starting at $349

Three to four hours, and the only package that touches the condition of the paint itself rather than just what is sitting on it. It includes the Signature Detail, then adds scratch and swirl removal before the wax goes on, so light imperfections are smoothed and polished rather than sealed under a coat of wax.

On the interior it adds an ozone treatment for odor removal and a fabric protection application. It also includes a cabin filter replacement, for which we need the year, make and model or the VIN at the time of the appointment so the right filter is on the truck when we arrive.

Odor is the reason a lot of people book this tier. Odor is not on the surface, it is in the fabric and in the air handling. Wiping and vacuuming reduce it. An ozone treatment addresses what is left.

The additions, stated plainly

Every one of the three packages carries a $25 addition for trucks and SUVs, and a further $25 for third row vehicles. That is not a surcharge for owning a bigger car. It is time. There is more glass, more panel, more carpet and another row of seats to work through.

When the answer is none of the three

If what you actually want is long term protection on the paint rather than a clean vehicle, the packages are the wrong ladder and a ceramic coating is the right conversation. If the vehicle is an RV, a motorhome or a boat, none of these apply either, because that work is priced by the foot.
