Oxidation on an RV, and why wax will not stick to it

Here is a test that costs nothing. Take a clean, slightly damp rag to a sunny sidewall panel on your RV and wipe it firmly. If the rag comes away with a chalky white residue on it, that is not road film. That is your gelcoat, and it is oxidizing.

Florida is unusually good at causing this. Gelcoat is a resin surface, and constant ultraviolet exposure breaks down the resin at the very top of it. What is left behind is a fine, porous, chalky layer. It looks dull, it feels dry, and it gets progressively worse the longer it sits.

Why waxing an oxidized RV is wasted effort

The instinct is completely reasonable: the surface looks dull, wax makes things shiny, so apply wax. The problem is mechanical. Oxidation prevents wax from bonding to the gelcoat and clearcoat. You are applying a protective layer onto a surface that is actively crumbling, so it has nothing solid to hold onto.

In practice you get a modest improvement that looks reasonable for a few weeks and then disappears, because the wax leaves along with the chalky layer it was sitting on. The oxidation underneath has not been addressed and carries on progressing.

What actually removing it involves

The oxidized layer has to come off before anything protective goes on. That means a machine compound to remove the oxidation and contaminants, which physically takes the degraded surface layer away and exposes sound gelcoat underneath. Only then does a machine wax application have something to bond to, followed by a hand or machine polish.

That is real labor on a large surface, which is why oxidation removal and machine wax is our heaviest exterior RV service. It starts at $30 a foot. It is more than double the wash and wax rate for a reason.

How RV work is priced

Everything on the exterior is priced by the foot, so a small trailer is never quietly subsidizing a forty footer.

• Basic RV wash: $8 a foot, with a $250 flat rate up to 35ft. Exterior brush wash and low pressure rinse, roof inspection, roof brush wash, awnings cleaned, exterior spray wax
• Wash and wax: $16 a foot. Everything above, plus a machine wax application at low speed for even coverage, and a hand or machine polish
• Oxidation removal and machine wax: $30 or more a foot. Adds the machine compounding step that removes the oxidation itself
• Exterior ceramic coating: quoted individually, because surface area and gelcoat condition both vary too much for a list price

Interiors are separate. A basic interior service starts at $175, with a $150 flat rate up to 30ft and $5 a foot above that. It covers sweeping, vacuuming and mopping, interior windows and mirrors, cleaning and sanitizing the bathroom, wiping out the fridge, and wiping down and sanitizing the upholstery. The deluxe interior service starts at $275 and adds spot cleaning of upholstery and carpeting plus a complete interior decontamination, cabinets and interior storage areas included. Combined interior and exterior packages start at $495.

Do not skip the roof

Every one of our exterior RV services includes a roof inspection and a roof brush wash, and that is deliberate. The roof is the surface nobody looks at and the one doing the most work. It is also directly upstream of every panel you do look at, so anything living up there ends up running down the sidewalls the first time it rains.

Roof coatings are available as separate services, including a vinyl roof UV treatment and an elastomeric rubber roof coating priced by the foot. Ask about the specific roof on your rig rather than assuming, because the right product depends on what the roof is made of.

Catching it early is much cheaper

Oxidation is progressive. A rig that gets washed and waxed on a sensible cycle may never need compounding at all. A rig that has sat uncovered through several Florida summers almost certainly will.
